LAWANG SEWU
Good Morning Ladies & Gentlemen , first of all I'd like to introduce myself my name is Dini and today I'd like to inform you about one of historical building in Semarang City, It's LAWANG SEWU.
Ladies and
gentlemen have you ever visited Lawang Sewu before ?Well Lawang Sewu is an old building which is located at Jl. Pemuda
it’s overlooking to Wilhelmina park or that has known as tugu muda areas. Do
you know the access to lawang sewu? Don’t worry because it’s very easy to get
to this building. It just takes 20 minutes from Ahmad Yani International
Airport and 15 minutes from Poncol or Tawang Railway station. And if you come from the direction of
Banyumanik it takes 15 minutes too. It can reach by public
transportation or private transportation.
The name of Lawang sewu came from Javanese word “lawang” and “sewu”, lawang means door and sewu means a thousand so lawang sewu means a thousand doors. Can you imagine it ? How wonderful it is
Semarang resident called it lawang sewu because it has many doors and windows. It was built in 1904 by dutch architect they are Prof. J.F Klinkhamer and B.J. Queendag. In 1907 this building was began to be used for Netherlands railway company. The shape of this building is like “L” in capital letter and at the right and left side of it there are Gothic towers, it used as water reservoirs and then some water was flowed into the underground room to make the room which in above it cold when the dry season and warm when the rainy season. It’s an unique technology isn’t?
In front of this building there is well pump house, its depth is about 1000m it was used to deliver the water to all room in Lawang Sewu such as the washbasin. In this building we can find five washbasins that was imported from Netherlands its brand is “van den berg” and until now it still can be used.

ladies and Gentlemen there are 3 parts of lawang sewu. The first part is A building it’s
the main building. In this building there is stained glass that was imported
from Netherland. It was described about the Netherlands railway company symbol.
It’s so beautiful.
From the first to the second floor there is a beautiful stairs its wide is 6m and it was made of concrete. The second building is B building, in this building we can see the miniature of lawang sewu. The third building is C building that used as train ticket printing . Now in this building we can find a small museum that contain of the materials to built lawang sewu such as ceramic tiles, perforated brick glazing, triangular ridge roof, bligon and wire mesh.
Ladies and gentlemen lawang sewu is famous as scary building , Right? How come? Because in lawang sewu there is a underground room that used as underground prison when Japanese government.
In this underground prison there are 3 rooms. The first one is sitdown jail it’s a space for confine Indonesian army and the top of it will closed by steel frame. It’s for 3 prisoner. And then stand up jail its height is about 2m and its width is about 3m it’s for 5-6 prisoner. The last one is decapitation room it’s a space to behead Indonesian army. I think this underground room is the scariest room. So anybody interested in it? And if you are interested in it, I recommend you to go there at Friday night. Because you’ll get the different taste there.

Because of it’s a the former of railway company you
can look an old locomotive there. It was moved by steam engine.Now lawang sewu
often be a place of exhibition such as Semarang expo, Tourism expo and many
others.
And how about if you come from outside of semarang or
abroad? Don’t worry because there are many hotel which can you live in such as
Pandanaran hotel, Crowne plaza, Gumaya tower hotel, Novotel, Dafam, Whiz and
many others.
If you want to visit this building you have to pay the
entrance fee IDR 10.000 for one person. And how about the facilities? In this
building you can find some toilet, a mushola and you can take a picture freely
there.
So I suggest you that you don’t have to think twice
because I promise you that you will not be disappointed for visiting Lawang
sewu. I just explain you about this building but I think it would be more
interesting if you visit this building. So anybody want to visit this building?
